Afghanistan: Finding a Solution

It is widely acknowledged that we are losing the war in Afghanistan. Is the solution more troops or a political one using negotiation, alliances and aid? What has life been like for the Afghan people since the occupation? Can we or they afford 7 more years of fighting? As the Obama administration is seeking it’s own strategy how can we be effective advocates for peace? These questions and others will be addressed at this timely forum.
Speakers:

ANDREW BACEVICH, Professor of International Relations and History at Boston University with a specialty in U.S. Foreign Policy and Security Studies. A graduate of the U. S. Military Academy, he received his Ph. D. in American Diplomatic History from Princeton University. Dr. Bacevich is the author of several books including The Limits of Power: American Exceptionalism (2008). His essays and reviews have appeared in The Nation, The New Republic, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, USA Today and many other publications

RACHEL WILLIAMS is the Rotary District Literacy Resource Coordinator for the Boston area launched "Adopt-A-School" which links Rotary clubs here and in northern Pakistan, through R.A.W.A. Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan, and has created a Matching Grant with a Rotary club in Pakistan to supply medicines to an Afghan refugee camp clinic.

DR. JOSEPH GERSON a Program Director of the Peace and Economic Security Program for the AFSC in New England. Has worked with local, national and international individuals, groups and leaders in efforts to avoid and end wars. His most recent book Empire and the Bomb: How the United States Uses Nuclear Weapons to Dominate the World was published by Pluto Books and the University of Michigan Press in April, 2007.

Directions: From Dorchester: Dorchester Ave. turns into Adams St. past the Baker Chocolate factory. Take the second right off Adams onto Canton/Randolph Ave. Road forks immediately. Take left fork onto Randolph Ave. St. Michaels is two blocks on the left. Ample parking on the street. From East Milton: Take Adams Street towards Dorchester. 1.5 miles beyond East Milton Square take a left onto Canton/Randolph Ave. (See above).
