When Pres. Obama was elected on a platform of HOPE, the American people expected a speedy end to the Iraq war. They expected negotiations to settle the Afghanistan and Israel/Palestine conflicts and reduce tensions with Iran.
They did not expect the new administration to delay exit from Iraq until 2012, or to escalate the war in Afghanistan by sending 21,000 more troops, as he has done. They did not expect an increase in drone strikes in Pakistan which have already killed 335 people, or the U.S. to strong-arm the Pakistani military into an operation which has left over two million internal refugees.
They did not expect military spending to continue to increase, with over $100 billion appropriated for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars in June 2009.
The administration’s policy review has resulted in a plan for a protracted counter-insurgency war in which human development aid and negotiations serve only as window dressing on a war policy targeted at defeating the Taliban on the battlefield and dominating Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the central Asia region.

The National Counter-Recruitment and Demilitarization Conference is less than a month away! On July 17-19 in Chicago, IL, a broad spectrum of people will come together to share skills and to form the relationships needed to build a permanent resistance to militarism.

According to NY Times, 2 million people became refugees inside Pakistan when the operation against the Taliban in Swat, Pakistan was launched aggressively about 3 months ago. They are living in tent camps, in over 100 degree temperatures, and lacking food, medicines, water. These numbers begin to approach the numbers of Afghan’s who fled the Soviet invasion to come to Pakistan as refugees.

The conflict in Afghanistan/Pakistan continues to worsen. The U.S. has sent more troops; there is increased fighting, violence, death and destruction; and a major new war may be coming. We must organize to stop this war, end militarism, and put the priority on funding social justice and improving the quality of life in our communities. This participatory workshop will present some basic information about the war in Afghanistan/Pakistan and cutting the military budget. We will discuss things we can do to help set things right.

The Committee in Solidarity with the Honduran Resistance (Comite en Solidaridad con la Resistencia Hondurena) was launched in Boston on August 1. The committee plans a fund-raiser for humanitarian aid, via the Bloque Popular, to people near the border where the Honduran President is now. The Boston committee will be working in solidarity with groups in Honduras such as the National Front of Resistance Against the Coup. The committee is also building two events, co-sponsored by a number of groups, including Centro Presente, on August 5 and 6.

the consequences of U.S. policy and the recent troop escalation that

I am writing to invite your young members and friends to apply for the Think Outside the Bomb National Conference to take place in Albuquerque, New Mexico this August 13-16. For five years, Think Outside the Bomb has brought young people together to share resources, strategize collaboratively, and build a widespread movement for nuclear disarmament. More than simply educating students on nuclear issues, we aim to engage every single participant intellectually, emotionally, and personally. We seek to give each participant not only the inspiration to work for a nuclear-free future for the coming year, but the tools and skills to do that work and the opportunity and camaraderie to start this organizing.
