United for Justice with Peace is a sponsor of this important event kicking off a fall schedule (Sept. 2, Sept. 24-25, Oct. 1, Oct. 17 and Oct. 24) calling for peace, a moratorium on home foreclosures and evictions, jobs, and a serious focus on climate change, renewable energy and green jobs. Let’s make sure that as many of us from UJP as possible join City Life and Jobs with Justice to attend this protest of Deutche Bank’s feasting and golfing at the same time that it forces our neighbors out of their homes.

Wednesday September 16, 2009
Start: 4:00 pm
End: 6:00 pm

Somewhere between 97 and 130 unionized clerical workers have been laid off in recent months at Harvard, not even counting term employees whose contracts weren't renewed. 35 Harvard custodians have lost their jobs. Hundreds of other administrative staffers and less-than-halftime employees have been let go. About 150 custodians suffered a 12.5% reduction in their already-low salaries, with no decrease in the amount of work they're expected to do! Hundreds of other workers have taken early-retirement buyouts, and their co-workers are frantically trying to pick up the slack, leading to speed-ups and overwork. Conditions for workers in dining halls are worse than ever.

100 Housekeepers Fired at Boston Area Hyatts.

Thursday, September 17, We're Telling Hyatt…

"Not In Our Town!"

On August 31 all housekeepers at Hyatt's three Boston area hotels were called into meetings and fired. They were given their last paychecks, told to clean out their lockers and leave.

Some had worked for the hotels for more than 20 years.

They weren't laid off because of a lack of guests.  They were replaced by a subcontractor Hyatt brought in which would pay workers $8/hour with no benefits.

Hyatt made $1.3 billion profit from 2004-2008, and had $1.2 billion in cash as of early August.

Twenty years ago, it seemed like a miracle was happening when the Cold War ended peacefully. We were handed the chance to walk away from the nuclear nightmare and redirect billions of Cold War dollars to neglected needs at home. The promise of a "peace dividend" remains, however, unfulfilled.

Now we are spending more money on the military than we ever did during the Cold War. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the excessive costs of the Military Industrial Complex are depleting our public resources amidst a global economic crisis. But we also now have the best chance in twenty years to challenge rampant military spending, and to reclaim the post-Cold War promise of a demilitarized economy.
