Violence Transformed

Poster Art: Standing for Peace and Justice is co-sponsored by Cambridge United for Justice with Peace, the Lesley University Division of Creative Arts in Learning and Violence Transformed 2010, an annual series of visual and performing arts events that celebrates the power of art, artists and art-making to confront, challenge and mediate violence in contemporary society.

The exhibit brings together historical posters from the 1960’s and 70’s and recent work by local artists.   The posters in this exhibit include iconic work such as War is Not Healthy for Children and other Living Things and Ben Shahn’s Stop the H Bomb Tests.  The posters express popular discontent with America’s wars against Viet Nam, Iraq and Afghanistan; support popular movements and revolutions inPortugal, Latin America and South Africa; and call for equal rights and justice for women, children and people of color.

The exhibit begins on Tuesday, Mar. 16 and runs until Tuesday, Apr. 20.  It will be located at Lesley University, 1815 Mass Ave., in the second floor Atrium of University Hall and will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays.   There will be an opening reception on Tuesday afternoon, Mar. 23 from 4:30 – 6:30.
