U.S. Social Forum to Draw 22,000 to Detroit

Opening tomorrow, the second U.S. Social Forum is expected to draw 22,000 left and progressive activists to Detroit June 22nd - 26th, under the slogan Another World is Possible -- Another U.S. is Necessary!

What is happening in Detroit and in Michigan is happening all across the United States. Detroit is a harbinger for what we must do in our communities! As grassroots activists and organizers, we work to address the indignities against working families and low-income people, and protect our human right to the basic necessities of life and against war. In Detroit, we can make change happen!

Caravans of buses and cars are coming from across the country. Marches are coming from 24 cities in the South and Midwest. People are coming by planes, trains, buses and carpools.

The schedule begins with Tues.'s 5 pm Opening March and Welcome; Wed.-Fri.'s more than a thousand Workshops, over forty Peoples' Movement Assemblies and three Plenaries (Thur. includes War & Militarism); through Sat.'s All Forum People's Movement Assembly and Closing Ceremony; and with Cultural Events, Parties and self-organized meetings every evening and through-out the days. What a USSF!

United for Peace and Justice, the national peace coalition of which UJP is a member, will hold a Peace March at 12 noon, on Wed.-Fri, on the riverside of Cobo Hall.     UFPJ will also hold a workshop for member groups,  "Shaping, Building and Moving Beyond War to Meeting Human Needs and Aspirations" at 10 am in Cobo Hall- W2-69.   The UFPJ Afghanistan Working Group will hold a workshop  "The Afghanistan War and the Movement to End It"  at 1 pm in Cobo Hall-DO-01B.

UJP will cosponsor a workshop on "The Struggle for New National Priorites"  Wednesday afternoon with Michigan Peace Action, and UJP's 25% Solution campaign will participate in a workshop "Move the Money from War to Our Communities" on Friday afternoon.

Go to www.ussf2010.org for registration, scheduling, other logistical info, the Children's Social Forum, Youth Camp and hotels and housing.

We don't expect the changes we need to come from Washington or Wall Street, so we are building a mass movement to fight for the healthcare, housing, jobs and peace that we need.

The purpose of the USSF is to effectively and affirmatively articulate the values and strategies of a growing and vibrant movement for peace and justice in the United States. Join us in Detroit. Get there if you can!

There will be a "Report Back to Connect Forward", July 13 in Dorchester, to bring the spirit of the Social Forum back to Boston.
