Alice Rothchild and Alan Meyers are Boston-area doctors who have led multiple delegations to Israel and Palestine. As members of The Health and Human Rights Project of American Jews for a Just Peace (AJJP), they have worked with NGOs in clinics, hospitals and refugee camps. They will share stories and analysis from their most recent visit in January 2011 that included interviews with both Jewish Israelis and Palestinian activists in Israel and the West Bank.
The Forum will focus on issues of civil rights, water, health care, and the impact of occupation on both the occupiers and the occupied. Alice and Alan will describe the current state of checkpoints, the separation wall, the expanding Jewish settlements in East Jerusalem and the West Bank as well as the rightward swing of Israeli politics.
They will also discuss the growing boycott, divestment and sanction movement as a nonviolent and creative option to move the possibilities for peace forward on a grass roots level in the face of years of stalled peace processes.
Alice Rothchild is a Boston based physician and Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School who has been active in the women’s movement, (starting with contributions to the first Our Bodies Ourselves) and in health care reform. She is the author of Broken Dreams, Broken Promises: Stories of Jewish and Palestinian Trauma and Resilience, (2nd edition 2010) and a contributor to Shifting Sands: Jewish Women Confront the Israeli Occupation, 2010. Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) works to achieve a lasting peace that recognizes the rights of both Israelis and Palestinians for security and self-determination. It provides a voice for Jews and allies who believe that peace in the Middle East will be achieved through justice and full equality for both Palestinians and Israelis. With offices in New York and California, 100,000 online activists, chapters across the country and an Advisory Board comprised of numerous prominent Jewish thinkers and artists, JVP supports nonviolent efforts here and in Israel-Palestine to end Israel’s Occupation, expand human and civil rights, and implement a US policy based on international law and democracy.
American Jews for a Just Peace (AJJP) is an alliance of activists in the United States working to ensure equal rights, safety, and dignity for all the people of historic Palestine. We were founded in Boston in September, 2008. AJJP operates as an alliance of autonomous chapters and individual members across the United States. AJJP is a grassroots, membership-driven network of activists who coordinate our collective work under a shared name and common principles. We are a predominantly Jewish organization and speak with a Jewish voice. However, we welcome the full and active participation of all people of good will who agree with our Common Ground.
