United for Justice with Peace whole-heartedly supports the striking Verizon workers. As we advocate for peace, we know there will be no peace without justice. We support collective bargaining and the unions' right to strike when negotiations break down.
We are grateful for the strength of the previous contracts between IBEW, CWA and Verizon and appreciate that they have maintained decent jobs and benefits in these difficult times. We would like to see more workers unionized and gain the power to negotiate a good contract with fair wages and benefits.
The CEO of Verizon makes approximately 300 times the salary of some of its Verizon employees. Verizon posted $6 billion in profits and $10 billion in dividends to their British partner. The company receives government subsidies and pays little in the way of taxes. We wonder if, in their desire to increase dividends to shareholders, they have forgotten their share of the burden.
We believe consumers want to do business with a company that not only provides a good service at reasonable cost, but one that pays a fair wage to its employees. Verizon may want to increase the dividends to its shareholders, but it should not do so solely at the expense of the workers.
We encourage you to write Verizon CEO using this form and to join the picket line with Verizon workers.
We look forward to the return of workers and management to the negotiating table.
