Boycott Shaw's, Support 300 Striking Workers

Tell Shaws Don't Lower Our Living Standards300 employees of Shaw's supermarket distribution center at Methuen have been fired after three weeks on strike.   They are members of United Food and Commercial Workers Union, Local 791.

United for Justice with Peace supports the labor movement in defending the Shaw's workers.    Peace activists, please join members of Mass. Jobs with Justice, the Mass. AFL-CIO, and the Teamsters in supporting UFCW with mobile pickets that move from store to store.   The pickets will urge consumers to boycott the chain, which employs 25,000 workers across New England.

"After only three weeks on strike, Shaw's chose the nuclear option in the labor dispute by moving to hire permanent replacement workers," Russ Davis of Jobs with Justice said in a Boston Globe interview.  "It means the company is threatening to throw 300 families on the street.   This is something that we feel is totally unacceptable.    It has become a top labor priority."   Mass. JWJ is a member of the UJP coalition.

Shaw's contract offer makes health care unaffordable for these workers and their families. That's just not right. Forcing workers to pay so much toward health care would be devestating to working families right here in Methuen, at a time when health care costs are soaring and money is already tight.

Please show Shaw's that the Greater Boston community supports Shaw's warehouse workers and Methuen's working families!   In this time of economic crisis, issues of economic survival and peace are tightly linked.

We need your support to protect our families.  "We are on strike because securing affordable health care at Shaw's is not just about us workers at the Methuen Warehouse.  It's about building healthier and stronger communities.  That's why we need everyone in the community to stand with us until Shaw's does the right thing."

Tell Shaw's that you will not patronize their stores until they do what is right for their Methuen Warehouse Workers.

Here is what you can do to help:

1) Adopt a store for informational leafleting. JWJ hopes to have folks at all 70 stores in Massachusetts. We will send a flyer and info so you can organize your members, friends, or family to go any time that's good for you. We will be asking the manager to support a fair settlement to the strike. Email Megan Pierce at for a flyer.

2) Meet Saturday at 10am at the Teamsters Local 25 Hall (544 Main St, Charlestown). From here we will be loading up cars to leaflet and picket as many stores as possible! To RSVP email Megan

3) Gather a few members of your community to give a pledge to the manager, asking him or her to support fair working conditions for the warehouse workers.  We have a pledge that we can send you!

4) Invite a striking worker to your next peace group's meeting. Email us to let us know when and where.
