Increasing talk of negotiation and reconciliation as a way forward to peace and military disengagement in Afghanistan raises questions about what sort of agreement could emerge and what sort of compromises will be made. While protecting the rights of Afghan women against a potentially oppressive Taliban regime is advanced as a reason for extended military engagement, some observers note that it is the conflict itself that is most threatening to Afghan women, and claim that the current government is increasingly uncaring of women's (and human) rights. As with so many other aspects of the Afghan conflict, there is little agreement. Author and 2010-2011 Radcliffe Fellow Ann Jones will explore some of the complexities of the difficult choices that lie ahead.
