CALL TO ACTION

APRIL 8, 2011

PENTAGON ACTION FOR PEACE and CLIMATE JUSTICE

 DISARMaggedon”

by the NATIONAL CAMPAIGN FOR NONVIOLENT RESISTANCE

The U.S. military is the single entity most responsible for climate devastation and injustice in the world!  Besides using more petroleum, and thus emitting more CO2 than most countries, it releases immeasurable amounts of Greenhouse Gases and lethal toxic chemicals into the air, land and water, in the course of maintaining over 900 military bases around the world (and in the US); while involved in training exercises and tests; in the transportation of troops, prisoners and equipment, in the high volume of fossil fuels required by inefficient military vehicles; and due to the horrific suffering and unlawful harm to persons and the environment, whether through exposure to toxic chemicals and material contained in bullets, bombs, cluster bombs, land mines, and missiles, or from the illegal use of incendiary weapons (white phosphorus or napalm), or uranium munitions, such as Depleted Uranium..(which has a half life of 4.5 billion years!)

We deplore the extensive and long-term damage to the ecosystem of victimized populations, caused by military interventions, wars and in order to fuel the US  military economy. Because the Pentagon is not required to account for pollution in the preparation for or carrying out of wars, the toxic emissions produced have been allowed to cause climate devastation in ever-increasing proportions.  Every day, hundreds of plant and animal species are in the process of going extinct; the global temperature is on the rise, and C02 emissions is well over 390 parts per million in the atmosphere! (350ppm being the upper limit)

The U.S. provides billions of dollars to countries which repress its citizens and neighbors; through allies funds rebel groups in order to maintain the war machine; and supports and trains death squads in Colombia and Indonesia; (and elsewhere) trains Latin American soldiers (at the Western Hemispheric Institute for Security Cooperation) involved in rampant human rights abuses; and has established AFRICOM, which will ensure more U.S. intervention on the continent of Africa.

It funds illegal and immoral torture of prisoners, whether directly or by proxy at bases and other prisons and prison camps, such as Guantanamo Bay and Bagram AFB. These activities cause further havoc with our ecosystem.

To all who are sick of heart and conscience over these actions by our government, we call upon you to join us at the Pentagon on April 8 for actions of nonviolent civil resistance as we take the risks of peacemaking.

FOR THE SAKE OF CLIMATE JUSTICE AND FOR PEACE,

WE MUST TAKE ACTION NOW!!

ACTION PLANNING MEETING

Thursday, April 7 -  Time and Place in DC to be Announced

We will come together in solidarity to act in resistance against the destructive, unjust and exorbitantly expensive activities of the U.S. military.  We will form autonomous affinity groups that will be undertake nonviolent civil resistance at the Pentagon on Friday, April 8. We will encourage groups to descend on the Pentagon around noon on April 8, but each group will decide when and where to meet to begin their action.

Now is a time for dissent not despair; for deepened commitment to peace, not complacency with war; for strengthened resistance, not weakened resolve. In the spirit and discipline of Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Dorothy Day, and others, for the sake of humanity, for the sake of peace and justice, and for the sake of Mother Earth and all our relations, we must act now!
