"Preparing for the Pandemic in Honduras" with Sendy Suazo, Omar Suazo and Alba Bodden

Friends, Will you join us this Wednesday at 7 PM, for a guided tour through Central America’s Atlantic Coast? The long neglected, underserved Caribbean provinces of Honduras, Belize, Nicaragua and Costa Rica, are a fascinating mix of cultures, indigenous peoples mixed with African slaves, some brought to work the plantations, build the railroads, some escaped from servitude on the big islands. There were the pirates who hid out from the Spanish and the English and formed alliances with the dwellers. There were the colonizers. It all came together to form a fascinating mixture of vibrant Native, African and Garifuna culture. Join us to hear about current challenges on the Honduras Coast, in the face of Covid, repression against native leaders and activists, a decade after Honduras' US backed military coup. Join us on Wed. at 7 PM!

Sendy Suazo will give an overview of her home town's history and Garifuna culture.

Omar Suazo will report from Honduras about his community’s efforts to organize to prepare and protect themselves in the light of the pandemic. The mostly Garifuna community of about 1000 homes is self-organizing to prepare for the coming storm.

Alba Bodden is a leader in a Boston based organization of Honduran immigrants that has been working for years addressing a range of issues.
