Response to State of the Union

As a member of a family with a son in the military, I had my sense of reality twisted around last night by President Obama. When he finally got around to the two wars which eat up billions of our tax dollars and, which have killed and maimed thousands of our young men and women, he spoke as if they are just another wonderful American program for progress and peace. He mentioned 100,000 troops returned from Iraq, but forgot to mention the 50,000 who remain.

300 Protest 20 Years of War on Iraq

Saturday, January 15, our fifth day of actions to shut down Guantanamo, etc, began with a rally at the White House marking 20 years of war on Iraq. We were around 300 people, with some of us in jump suits and hoods. Speakers quoted from Dr Martin Luther King and told stories of the detainees and the struggle to free them, or charge and try those who are guilty of some crime. I had a conversation with one of the police that indicated that he was moved by our actions and wished us well. From there we went to a teach-in at a nearby church.

Bilal's 2007 dynamic installatoin Domestic Tension placed him on the receiving end of a paintball gun that was accessibleonline to a worldwide audience, 24 hours a day. Newsweek called the project "breathtaking" andthe Chicago Tribune called the month-long piece "one of the sharpest works of political art to be seen in a long tim," and named Bilal its 2007 Artist of the Year.
